Hawthorne is quickly becoming well known for its effects on the cardiovascular system, specifically the heart. Hawthorne has three major effects on the heart. First, it improves coronary circulation. This helps improve the oxygen flow to the heart muscle itself (hypoxaemia) and decreases the symptom of angina (chest pain). Secondly, it strengthens the heart muscle probably secondary to the increase of oxygen supply. This is very effective in treating patients with congestive heart failure. This in turn helps decrease high blood pressure by making the heart more efficient at pumping blood. Thirdly, hawthorne can normalize cardiac arrhythmias. It has been effective in studies involving paroxysmal tachycardia, extrasystoles and arrhythmic tachycardia.
