| Vitiligo: Vitiligo is a skin disease characterized by the loss of natural pigmentation of the skin (melanocytes). It occurs in patches with distinct borders. The cause is unknown, but it is speculated that it is an autoimmune disease where white blood cells (lymphocytes) attack and destroy the pigment cells (melanocytes) in the skin. It may be associated with hypothyroidism or hypochlorhydria. It occurs in about one percent of the population, and equally in males and females. It is usually present before the age of twenty and may become more obvious during summer months as the surrounding skin tans. It occurs mostly on sun-exposed skin, bony prominences, and naturally darker pigmented areas such as nipples, groin, and genitalia. It is worse in smokers and pregnancy, and there may be a familial occurrence. It is important to begin treating vitiligo as soon as possible. Signs and Symptoms: White patches of skin, devoid of pigment. Unable to tan. Skin texture is otherwise normal. Treatment Plan: Lifestyle Changes:
