Ulcerative Colitis:

Is an inflammatory bowel disease, similar to Crohn’s disease, however it is more common. It involves an inflammation of the colonic mucosa and submucosa. It may involve only part of the large intestine or all of it. The most accurate diagnosis of this disease is via a sigmoidoscopy and stool cultures. It is imperative to treat this disease because there is an increased risk of cancer associated with it. It is important to realize that absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins occurs in the large intestine and supplementation is necessary to ensure adequate blood levels of these vitamins. Additionally, the UC patient is usually very ill from the symptoms associated with it, and it is difficult to function normally. The inflammation of the colonic mucosa makes the tissue very weak and it tends to bleed easily with the slightest trauma. Therefore, the purpose of some of Dr. Metcalfe’s dietary suggestions are to decrease any trauma during digestion. The occurrence of UC is greater from the ages of 15 to 30, and again from 50 to 70. There is less of a genetic risk factor with UC than Crohn’s disease. This disease may become chronic with remissions and exacerbations in patients. Some patients may have complete recovery after an initial flare-up. There has been a lot of research done on the effects of food allergies and nutritional supplements on UC.
