Tinnitus:
A ringing or buzzing in the ears which
originates from within the head. The noise may be present all of the time or may be
intermittent. Tinnitus is a symptom with many possible causes. These include side effects
from drugs, ear infections, obstruction of the external ear canal with wax or a foreign
object, hearing loss, trauma to the head, hypertension, Menieres disease,
arteriosclerosis, anemia, hypothyroidism, etc. Dr. Metcalfe recommends a good physical
exam along with a hearing exam for tinnitus patients.

Lose weight if necessary.

Dietary Changes:
Low fat diet. Reduce saturated fats by
choosing lean cuts of meat and avoiding fried foods. A study done in a hospital comparing
patients with low fat diets and high fat diets. The lower fat diet group had better
hearing. (Rosen S., Olin P, and Rosen HV; Dietary prevention of hearing loss. Acta
Otolaryngol 70: 242-247,1970)
Increase consumption of B vitamin rich foods: whole grains, wheat germ, meat, fish,
poultry.
Avoid sugar. Dr. Metcalfe has seen a case where tinnitus was caused by hypoglycemia.
Eat 6 small meals a day. Make sure each one contains 20 grams of protein.
Drink 10 glasses of filtered water a day.
Increase dietary fiber to 30 grams a day.
Eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily.
