Shingles/Herpes Zoster: Shingles is caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus, which also causes chicken pox. Usually as children we contract chicken pox, it lasts for a couple of weeks and then goes away. However, the virus never leaves our body but lives unnoticed in the nerve cells of the central nervous system. Shingles is characterized by an initial prodrome of illness leading to the eruption of painful blisters along the path of a particular peripheral sensory nerve root. It is usually caused by stress, a suppressed immune system or systemic disease. It usually effects adults fifty years or older.
