Restless Leg
Syndrome:
RLS is a disorder of the lower limbs that
causes strange sensations making the legs need to move. The symptoms occur only while the
legs are at rest, and more often while lying down in bed. It seems to affect athletes and
non-athletes equally. The cause is unknown. It may lead to insomnia and cause anxiety. Dr.
Metcalfe has treated this problem many times, and finds that patients respond really well
but must continue treatment or else their symptoms will return.
Signs and Symptoms:
Tingling, aching, pulsating, electrical
sensation of the legs.
Treatment:
Lifestyle Changes:
Exercise 1-hour everyday.
Stretch legs before bed and upon arising. Find an effective stretching regimen, which
takes 10 minutes, and target all of the muscles of the legs.
Avoid sitting for too long. Take time out every two hours to walk around.
Elevating the legs on a pillow or the back of the couch above the body may help.
Dietary Changes:
Avoid caffeine.
Increase fruits and vegetables to 5 servings a day.
Increase essential fatty acid intake by eating more nuts, seeds, 3 servings/week of fish,
olive and canola oil.
Decreased saturated fat intake: choose lean cuts of meat and avoid fried foods.
Increase fiber to 30 grams a day.
Increase water consumption to 10 glasses a day.
Natural Solutions:
RLS Management Protocol:
Mag Glycinate: 2-3 tablets before bed.
Mineral Complex: 2 capsules before
bed with Mag Glycinate.
E-400 Selenium: 1 capsule twice daily
with meals.
