Psoriasis:

Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the skin. It is characterized by thick layers of silvery scales over red plaques of skin. It is hereditary and chronically recurring and causes severe damage to the skin. It usually affects the scalp, elbows, knees and fingernails. The cause is unknown, however, it is known that the skin grows at an accelerated rate. Normally skin turnover takes about 28 days, whereas in the psoriatic patient, it only takes 3 – 4 days. Factors that may trigger psoriasis include trauma to an area, sunburns, respiratory infections, drugs, low humidity and stress. The disease may exhibit periods of remissions and exacerbation’s, and is also linked to arthritis. Dr. Metcalfe has seen cases from small, localized areas to extensive coverage of the entire body. She recommends that her patients follow the treatment protocol closely for at least three months and incorporate it into the rest of their lives.
