Parkinson’s Disease:

Parkinson’s disease effects the central nervous system whereby there is destruction of cells in a region of the brain called the substantia nigra. The cells of this part of the brain are responsible for making the neurotransmitter named dopamine. Dopamine is required for nerve and muscle cell communication. The occurrence of the disease is usually after the age of fifty, and occurs equally in males and females. The cause of the disease is not known, however, it is believed these cells are destroyed by oxidative damage. The first symptom of PD is typically a fine tremor of the hand while it is at rest. The disease progresses to involve all of the muscles of the body and eventually leads to the early termination of life. There is a lot of new research being done with pharmaceutical agents, surgery and natural supplements to treat PD. There are also many support groups at local health centers for sufferers of PD and their families. Dr. Metcalfe encourages patients with PD to learn as much as they can about the disease because of its progressive nature. Dr. Metcalfe believes natural supplements greatly benefit the PD patient from her experience.
