Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is caused by overuse and injury of the cartilage component of the joint, however there is also a genetic predisposition and being overweight increases the incidence of this disease. This is the most common form of arthritis and it is also the most treatable. The cartilage in the joints are like smooth pillows surrounding the ends of our bones. It is there to absorb shock as we move. This layer of cartilage wears thin and becomes rough with overuse or injury and as we age. Inflammation results and causes swelling in the joint space limiting motion and causing pain. It is very important to treat joint pain as early as possible. The sooner its treated the faster it will heal.

Signs and Symptoms:

Onset is usually slow and progressive involving one joint.
Pain worsened by exercise.
Grinding of the joint.

Treatment:

Lifestyle Changes:

Exercise is important to rehabilitate the joint. Crosstraining becomes an effective technique for rehabilitation and strengthening of the joints. Try non-weight bearing exercises a few times a week such as jogging in a swimming pool, swimming, cycling, elliptical trainers or walking with new shoes (try a high quality cushioned running shoe with cushioning greater than 2 cm). Weight training will help to strengthen the muscles and tendons around the joint. Exercise in general will help to increase blood flow to and around the joint. Exercise helps stimulate cartilage to rebuild itself.
Stop smoking.

Dietary Changes:

Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables for the benefits of the anti-oxidants and flavenoids. The vitamin C is very necessary for cartilage growth.
Drink 10 to 12 glasses of filtered water daily.
Avoid saturated fats as this may increase the inflammation pathways in your body.
Increase the good essential fatty acids in your diet by eating fish 3x/week, eating more raw and dry roasted nuts and seeds, and using olive and canola oil. This will be very anti-inflammatory.
