Influenza is a viral infection by the orthomyxoviruses. There are many different genetic types of this virus, which makes it difficult to treat with a vaccine. The promotion of a single vaccine to ward off the flu is a game of chance. It seems more sensible to boost the immune system on a whole to fight off all strains of the flu. If you are elderly, pregnant, have valvular heart disease, or have a compromised immune system, Dr. Metcalfe recommends supplementing your immune system to stimulate its defense mechanisms beginning in the fall season.
