Hypothyroidism:

Low thyroid hormone levels have a great impact on every cell of the body. Thyroid hormones are responsible for all of our cells in our body to make proteins, and they enable cells to consume oxygen, especially in liver, kidney, heart and skeletal muscles. Thyroid hormones are made of iodine, which we consume in our diet. The brain stimulates the thyroid gland to turn off or on, depending on the blood level of thyroid hormones.

There are two types of hypothyroidism: primary and secondary. Primary hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland shrinks and it is of little function. This is the most common type and it is thought to be caused by an autoimmune attack of the body. Secondary hypothyroidism is caused by a decrease in the brain of thyroid stimulating hormone or thyroid releasing hormone. This results in a decreased signal from the brain to stimulate the thyroid gland to work.
