Gallstones: The gallbladder is an organ that helps the body digest fat with a substance called bile. Normally bile salts are soluble in water; however, they may also become insoluble and form stones. These stones may go unnoticed forever, or they may cause severe pain. Stones are more common in women over the age of forty who are overweight and have high cholesterol. Other risk factors are poor diet and a family history. The most common medical treatment is to remove the gallbladder. Dr. Metcalfe recommends to patients that unless a gallstone is blocking the bile duct, to try natural therapies for three months before surgery.
