Epilepsy:

Also known as "seizure disorder", which is actually a symptom of an underlying disease. It consists of a group of disorders, which are characterized by a rapid onset of recurrent changes in the electrical activity of the brain. This episode of rapid brain activity is called a seizure. Seizures can either be convulsive when the motor function of the body is disrupted or non-convulsive where there is loss of sensory, thoughts or emotional feelings. Brain damage, head trauma, infections of the central nervous system, stroke, heavy metal poisoning, metabolic disorders (low calcium, hypoglycemia, and hypoparathyroidism), or brain tumors may cause epilepsy. There are three major classifications of seizure type: Partial/focal, generalized, and clonic/tonic. In children who less than 18 months old and have seizures, it is imperative to rule out a Vitamin B6 deficiency. Many nutritional deficiencies have been researched with various types of seizure disorder.

Signs and Symptoms:

The onset of a seizure varies with each type of seizure. They can vary from an initial aura of gastric discomfort to loss of consciousness, loss of motor control of the body, to an episode of mental confusion or zoning out. The symptoms are complex and detailed for each type. It would be best to refer to the Merck Manual, seventeenth edition for a complete list of associated signs and symptoms.

Treatment:

Lifestyle Changes:

Avoid dangerous situations where another seizure may occur and cause you or others harm.
Join a support group
Continue treating epilepsy for two years after your last seizure.
Rule out any exposure to toxic metals as these can effect neural function.

Dietary Changes:

6 small meals a day, each containing 20 grams of protein. There is a correlation of low blood sugar and seizure occurrence, so avoiding hypoglycemia is of great importance.
Avoid caffeine.
No sugar.
Ketogenic diet: a diet that is high in fats and low in protein and carbohydrates has shown to effectively help control seizures. This type of diet creates an acidification of the tissues of the body, which may help regulate nerve conduction.

Natural Solutions:

Methyl-Max: 2 capsules twice daily.
L-Taurine: 1 capsule three times daily.
Mineral Complex: 3 capsules twice daily.
