Diabetes:

Is a disease where the body either stops making enough insulin or the cells of the entire body become less sensitive and less able to utilize the insulin. The purpose of insulin is like that of a gatekeeper. It promotes our cells to take up glucose from our blood stream. Without it, our cells would not have any glucose for energy and our blood sugar would become dangerously high. Diabetes is a disease on the rise in our society. Diabetes is thought to be caused by genetic disorder, environmental causes, obesity and maybe some viral or bacterial infections.

There are two types of diabetes. Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) is a disease where the pancreas no longer makes insulin. This is when people must inject insulin daily. Secondly, Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM), where the cells become less sensitive to the insulin made by the pancreas. NIDDM is also called Adult Onset Diabetes. This is usually controlled with oral medication and diet. Both types of diabetes run the risk of severe damage to the body including blindness, skin ulcerations, painful neuropathies in the extremities and infections. Nutritional supplements, diet and lifestyle can have a profound effect on both types of diabetes.
