Breast Cysts:

Monthly self breast exams combined with a yearly breast exam by a physician and a yearly mammogram (age 40+) are every woman’s best friend for the prevention of breast cancer. It is alarming for women to palpate a lump in their breasts, and it is essential for them to see their physician immediately for a diagnosis. Once the diagnosis of benign breast cyst is made by the physician, a women can then decide how she wants to treat it. Often, the doctor will want to aspirate the cyst with a needle to remove the fluid contents. However, often the cysts return. The needle aspirations are quite painful and women usually do not like to have it done repeatedly. These cysts may be very painful for women, so treatment is essential. Cyst formation occurs at a higher incidence with women who have fibrocystic breast disease, but cysts may arise in a perfectly healthy breast and with breast feeding. It is thought that breast cysts form from hormonal changes, and do not increase a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer. Dr. Metcalfe recommends treating the cyst from internal supplementation and from topical external treatments.
