Contains specific nutrients and cofactors utilized by detoxification pathways involved with mercury elimination. Sources of mercury exposure include dental amalgam, contaminated fish, soil, water and other environmental sources. Mercury toxicity occurs primarily through intracellular glutathione depletion and oxidative damage. N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine has been shown to increase both intracellular and mitochondrial glutathione levels, and to exhibit chelating effects on mercury and other heavy metals. Selenium has been shown to take part in mercury detoxification through competition for binding sites, formation of inactive mercury-selenium compounds and prevention of oxidative damage.
